The
Canvasback Duck, like most ducks, spends most of its time
paddling around ponds and looking for tasty water plants
to eat. They love to dive for their food, spending a lot
of time underwater at the bottom where the shoots are
tender. They will also dive to avoid watchers, who the
ducks likens to predators; of course, the main form of
travel for the duck is flight. The Canvasback Duck also
likes to eat molluscs, and it does this by thrusting its
bill into mud and feeling around in the much. One of the
most visible things about the Canvasback Duck is their
eyes; their eyes are very red and striking, giving the
bird a strange and almost glaring look. Canvasbacks nest
in marshes and swampy areas, and like many other aquatic
birds they suffer when wetlands are drained for human
developments. Like other waterfowl (such as the Canada
Goose) the Canvasback Duck likes to fly in V-shaped formations
with the Alpha Male Duck in the front. |
