This
sea bird is very easy to spot; it looks like it got a
bad haircut. Aptly named for its distinctive crest, the
Crested Auklet is designed for life in the cold sea. Frequenting
the shores of the coast of Alaska, the Crested Auklet
winters in the freezing waters of the Northern Pacific.
It dives beneath the waters (and the ice if the water
becomes frozen) to find small to find small fish that
it feeds on. Like many sea birds the Crested Auklet is
very graceful under the water and has a habit of rocketing
out of the water when its finished a dive for food. The
crested auklet lives and breeds on islands and beaches
off and winters in the open ocean. Crested auklets usually
lay just one egg, most often among very rough rocks and
boulders. The chick will fledge in just a little over
a month. Crested Auklets nest in large colonies. |
