Perovaradin
Fortress was built by Austrians in eighteen century. The
Fortress lies on a hill beside Danube, overlooking the
city of Novi Sad. On the opposite side of the river is
the centre of Vojvodina region in present day Serbia and
Montenegro. The fortress was built according to plans
originating from Sebastian Vauban, and it is a cery secure
place indeed. Meant to sustain a siege using 18th Century
modes of attack, it has sixteen kilometres of underground
galleries on four levels and is encrusted with rifle embrasures
for shooting at attackers. The above ground fortress is
constructed mainly of reinforced masonry, which while
secure against a poorly funded attack, any force armed
with cannon would make short work of the walls and it
is assumed that the fortress soon became obsolete. The
underground portions (bunkers) are very secure, even to
this day. |
